Locks of Love The Rio Grande Cancer Foundation has been a presence in El Paso since 1996 and exists to reduce the human and economic impact of cancer on the citizens of El Paso County through the financial support and development of effective programs for cancer patients and their families.

The Rio Grande Cancer Foundation (RGCF) seeks to create a grant making process that is both flexible and user friendly.   Please take time to read the guidelines in its entirety as well as the Grant FAQs.  They provide helpful information that will make the process easier.

Mission

The RGCF Funding Policies

Funding is limited to non-profit, tax exempt organizations whose programs meet our mission and funding focus.  These organizations must qualify under IRS status 501(c)(3) or Section 170 (c).   Proof of exemption status is required.  (Unless previously provided.)

The RGCF does not make grants to:
  • Cancer research
  • individuals or scholarships
  • requests outside El Paso Countyfilms or videos as stand-alone projects; endowment fundsreligious organizations for religious purposes
  • projects over 5 years in duration
  • fundraising events or projects
  • endowment funds
  • past operating deficits
  • organizations that are political or partisan in purpose

Important Information

  • Application deadline is September 15.
  • Applications cannot be submitted more than 60 days prior to deadline.
  • Nonprofit organizations can submit only one request for consideration in any 12 month period.
  • Please do not submit application using all upper-case lettering.

The Rio Grande Cancer Foundation has upgraded to a web=based grant making program.  When you click on the link below, you will be taken to a screen where you will be asked to sign in and select your password.

 

Caution:

 Your e-mail address will be your user ID.  It should be an email address that anyone accessing the grant making program can remember.  Keep in mind your email ID is specific to your organization. 

As you begin the application process, you will input information about your organization.  Using your user ID and password, you will always have access to your information and you will be able to update it as your convenience. 

You can save your request at any point and come back later to finish it!

Grant FAQ's

Are there grant making priorities?

Yes, priority is given to:

  • More effective ways of doing things – ideas that require risk taking.
  • Projects where a moderate amount of grant money can have an impact.
  • Project that show collaboration with other organizations.

Are there things you will not fund?

Yes, the Foundation generally does not consider grants asking for:

  • Cancer research
  • individuals or scholarships
  • requests outside El Paso County
  • films or videos as stand-alone projects; endowment funds
  • religious organizations for religious purposes
  • projects over 5 years in duration
  • fundraising events or projects
  • endowment funds

How does the Rio Grande Cancer Foundation make grants?

The Board of Directors is responsible for approving all requests that have been researched and recommended by staff and advisory committees.

My organization wants to apply for a grant. Who is elligible?

Grant requests will be considered only from agencies located within or offering services to the citizens of El Paso County.    Applicants must be exempt from income taxes under Section 501(c)(3)  of the Internal Revenue Service Code.  Grants will generally not be made for annual campaigns, dinners or special events, individuals, capital campaigns or travel. 

What amounts do you fund ?

Most of our grants are between $5,000 and $25,000.  However, larger grants are possible for critical community projects or emergencies, depending, of course, on availability of resources.

 

What is your deadline ?

What sets a grant request apart from others ?

Some important issues to address include:

  • Does the project fill an unmet need?
  • Is the budget reasonable?
  • Does the request show collaboration with other organizations?
  • What is the reputation of the applying organization?
