The Kitchen Project

My kitchen is: Too small. Crowded, but still inviting. A gathering place. A homework table. A refuge for junk mail. A repository for dog food bowls. An invitation to grab a beer from the refrigerator. A safe haven for confidences and gossip. A child’s permission for pantry pilfering. The place where the policeman gave us the fatal report. Remembrances of Poppo’s red chili, simmering pots of Sunday beans and holiday tamale assembly line. Where the party bar is set up. Where family pulls pieces of the turkey off the bone. Where the Bose CD player spins music from Nat King Cole and ZZ Top alike. Where the recipe for the Kitchen Project was concocted.

As the executive director for the foundation, I am keenly aware of the many needs facing cancer patients. In our 13 year history, the foundation has made it a priority to address these needs through grantmaking ($4.5 million to qualified grantees over the past 10 years) and programs and services (the J. Leighton Green Cancer Resource Center AKA The Green House, the Patient Air Transport Service, The Four Seasons Beauty Program, the George Ball Childcare Program, In the Know magazine). My sincere thanks to those donors who purchased a song in tribute to their own heroes and heroines, to my board of directors for their faith in the project, and to my wonderful staff Jutta, Izzy and Cindi who are more family than employees. I am indeed blessed to have grown up with some of El Paso’s finest musicians and to enjoy a life-long friendship with them. Every one of the musicians who have contributed to this CD did so at their own personal expense, time and energy. I am deeply indebted to them for the ease in which they made the project happen.
